Fiat-Chrysler’s performance division, Mopar, is offering the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat’s V8 engine in an aptly named ‘Hellcrate’ kit.

Announced at the 2017 SEMA show, a specialty equipment and aftermarket expo held annually in Las Vegas, the 527kW 6.2-litre supercharged V8 will now be available for anyone to buy.

Due to emissions regulations in the US, only factory Hellcat vehicles and pre-1976 vehicles can legally use the engine in a road-registered vehicle.

The motor-only Hellcrate costs US$19,530 and an additional US$2195 ‘plug and play’ system is available to convert older vehicles. It includes the powertrain control module, power distribution centre, wiring harness, oxygen sensors as well as an accelerator pedal.

“Never before has a supercharged, factory-direct 707-horsepower crate engine kit been offered, and we are proud to be the first to deliver a solution enthusiasts have demanded,” said Pietro Gorlier, head of Mopar.

“This ultimate powertrain option fits the needs of owners and fans who demand iconic performance.”

The Hellcrate is the second-most powerful engine produced in America, only pipped by the 626kW Dodge Challenger SRT Demon engine.

Mopar's factory-backed Hellcrate is covered by a three-year warranty in America and Fiat Chrysler Australia is currently investigating the possibility of offering it locally.
