Chinese-owned MG Motors has demonstrated a commitment to improve China’s lacklustre safety record in Australia by being the first to score the maximum 5-star safety rating.

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) awarded the 5-star rating to the MG GS SUV, under the current (and therefore, toughest) 2017 testing guidelines.

The GS becomes the first Chinese-built vehicle to achieve the feat in Australia, lifting the previous 4-star rating declared at the start of this year under 2016 guidelines.

ANCAP said a new specification sheet and a stronger result in the pole test gave the GS enough points to step up from 4- to 5-stars.

“We initially assessed this model earlier this year and saw that while structurally it offered sound levels of occupant protection, its safety specification did not meet what is now expected as a minimum for a 5-star car,” ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin, said.

“MG must be commended for upgrading this model and this achievement raises the bar for other similar brands entering the very competitive Australian new vehicle fleet.”

ANCAP said the 5-star safety rating applies to all MG GS models built from August 2017 and on sale from October 2017.

Meanwhile, two of Australia’s light car offerings - Kia’s Rio and the Suzuki Swift - also secured maximum 5-star safety ratings.

But in the case of the Swift, ANCAP believed that the base model Swift GL fell short of the 5-star standard and awarded it a 4-star rating instead.

“The Swift is an affordable car and we would encourage consumers to opt for one of the higher specified models to ensure they’re getting the best safety package,” Mr Goodwin said.

Therefore, the Swift’s 5-star rating applies to the GL Navigator, GL Navigator with Safety Pack and the GLX Turbo variants only.
