The Mercedes-AMG G63 is the SUV version of glamping.

Combining go-anywhere ability, potent performance and the latest in Benz's luxury interior decorating, the top-of-the-range G-Class shields one from the harsh surroundings and is the king of the camp site.

Pricing for the G63 starts at $247,700 before on-road costs, which is a moderate rise compared to the outgoing version which cost $235,410.

Mercedes-Benz has left the G-Wagen's styling mostly unchanged for about 40 years since it was first launched which gives the serious off-roader a certain retro charm that is hard to find now the Land Rover Defender has left us.

However, while the appearance may be familiar, what lies beneath is decidedly different.

The new version scores an updated powertrain: a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine that produces 430kW and a hefty 850Nm that replaces the 420kW/760Nm 5.5-litre V8. Benz has also hooked up the new V8 to a slick-shifting nine-speed automatic that sends power to all four wheels. This combo allows the big machine to rumble from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds on the way to a top speed limited to 220km/h. A selectable AMG exhaust also makes the most of the V8's voice.

On the tough side of things, the G63 features three separate differential locks and low range gears. Its water fording depth has increased by 100mm, departure angles increased by 2.6 degree and ground clearance has been raised by 3mm.

A new front independent suspension system has replaced the live axle set-up from the last iteration and AMG's electronic damper modes can also be utilised.

On the luxury front, the G63 rides on impressive 21-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with red brake calipers, it has a 15-speaker Burmester sound system, Nappa leather steering wheel and Benz's latest Comand infotainment system that is accessed through a giant 12.3-inch display that is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Finishing touches include heated front and outer-rear seats, leather upholstery and wood grain finishes.

The new Mercedes-AMG G63 is now available for order with deliveries commencing in the third quarter of 2018.
