When Mercedes-Benz announced that its first all-new G-Class in 38 years was set to take a trip upmarket, it wasn’t kidding... with leaked images of part of the new car’s interior confirming the claims.

While the new images don’t reveal every trick the new G-Class has up its sleeve, the dashboard images, first published by Dutch publication Autoweek, give away some key design details.

Multiple updates to the outgoing model over the years have seen it morph from tough but basic workhorse to something much more contemporary, but as the first clean-sheet design the new generation features a more integrated design.

The sense of ruggedness is maintained thanks to a horizontally-oriented layout underscored by and aluminium decor that runs from side-to-side and incorporates afterburner-inspired air vents set in square housings.

The iconic dash mounted grab handle remains in front of the passenger, but beside it the G-Class upgrades to a massive infotainment screen, and although not pictured in these images expect a dual-display widescreen layout on models bound for Australia, much like the current E-Class.

Other borrowed elements include switches in the centre stack that can be found in other models across the range, plus a steering wheel already in use on the 2018 S-Class.

Uniquely, the G-Class features prominent switchgear between the centre vents allowing easy access to the off-roader’s locking differentials.

Although it can’t be seen in these images, the new G will also house a controller in the centre console for Benz’s Comand infotainment system which will combine a touchpad, click-wheel, and shortcut buttons to drive the infotainment system.

Full official details are set to be revealed soon with the new G-Class slated to make its official public debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
