McLaren 720S Track Pack revealed
McLaren has put its 720S supercar on a carbon-fibre diet to shed even more weight.
Already built on a carbon-fibre tub and weighing 1419kg in standard form, the Track Pack substitutes parts and adds track day gear that brings the total bill down to 1394kg.
Using the 720S Performance as a base, the Track Pack adds a McLaren Special Operations carbon-fibre active rear wing to the already-present carbon-fibre front diffuser, front and rear air vents and mirror caps. Protruding out of the rear fascia is a twin sports exhaust system while underneath the normal wheels have been substituted for lightweight forged ten-spoke alloys.
There’s even more carbon weave and track-focused gear inside. Carbon-fibre bucket seats with Alcantara trim feature six-point harnesses mounted to a titanium roll-cage. An Alcantara steering wheel compliments the rest of the finishes and extended carbon-fibre paddle shifters connect the driver to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The featherweight Brit doesn’t get a boost in engine performance, but it already produces 527kW at 7250rpm and 770Nm at 550rpm from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. However, there are some extra tweaks to get the best performance at the track including a McLaren Track Telemetry system that can record lap and sector times with video overlay – recorded from three cameras mounted around the car including in the cockpit. A further ‘Track’ driving mode is included that sharpens suspension and driveline settings just a little further than the ‘normal’ 720S is capable of.
Priced in the UK from $415,000 the 720S Track Pack costs around $50,000 more than the base supercar but could be considered a steal compared to the almost twice as expensive track-only 720S GT3, which will deliver the meanest version of the model yet when it debuts in 2019.
