Lexus will attempt to upstage its parent brand Toyota at the 2019 Detroit motor show next month.

The Japanese luxury brand has confirmed it will reveal a hard-core, high-performance version of its RC F coupe at the American expo.

With Toyota expected to reveal the born-again Supra in its final production form, the Japanese brands are looking to create plenty of headlines - and support - from driving enthusiasts against a tide of a autonomous vehicles and pick-up trucks from American car makers.

Lexus has released little in terms of detail about its show stopper, other than issuing a teaser image of a carbon fibre rear wing on a car that will be called RC F Track Edition.

The wing is expected to be just one element of a significant upgrade that takes inspiration from its GT3 racer, with improved aerodynamics all around the car including an aggressive front bumper with a larger splitter, wider wheels fitted with sticky tyres, bigger brakes and modified suspension.

The car's 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 is also anticipated to come in for a few tweaks, elevating power beyond the standard RC F's 351kW and 530Nm, while the eight-speed automatic could be upgraded for faster shift times.

The Lexus RC F Track Edition will rival the likes of the BMW M4 GTS and Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe.
