Lexus has announced it will be unveiling a new crossover concept at the 2018 Detroit motor show next month. The only image released by the Japanese luxury auto maker teases a shadowy glimpse of what to expect.

Modified by TMR to better depict the vehicle, the image of the concept car has sweeping, muscular design elements and what appears to be two rear-mounted displays. Closer inspection of one of the screens show an outline of the car that appears as a SUV coupe, similar to the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. While there’s also a crease for the ‘rear’ door, the LF-1 might be a long-gated two-door or have a suicide door setup to buck convention.

The car was designed at Toyota’s Calty design studio based in Newport Beach, California, and is likely to preview Lexus’ new styling direction. Lexus has previously launch LF concepts such as the LF-LC and LF-FC that went on to be the LC 500 and LS production vehicles, meaning there’s a chance that this concept will do the same.

Lexus says the LF-1 is a flagship SUV that “redefines the boundaries of luxury” while being a “crossover with no limits”. The glowing blue Lexus badge on the tailgate also suggests the new SUV will be either a hybrid or all-electric vehicle, following parent-company Toyota’s plans for an electrified future.

All will be revealed at the Detroit motor show in January 2018 and TMR will be on the ground with all of the latest updates.
