Just when you thought you’d had all the shadowy, artistic teasers you could take ahead of the LA Auto Show, Infiniti joins the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Toyota with a barely-recognisable snippet of its own.
In this instance, the carefully cropped grille and headlight are tipped to belong to a new-generation medium SUV from the Japanese brand to take the place of the current QX50.
Although that vehicle doesn’t come to Australia yet, the new model is likely to be a a much-needed way of helping the brand build its profile in Australia against cars like the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, and BMW X3.
Previewed by the QX50 Concept at the Detroit Auto Show at the start of 2017, the new QX50 promises to evolve Infiniti’s current styling themes including the brand’s trademark double-arch grille and slim human eye headlights.
Hot on the heels of the QX50 teaser, Infiniti also reminded the motoring press of its 2016 Variable Compression Turbo (or VC-Turbo) engine concept, suggesting that the new technology could be a front-runner to appear in the production QX50.
Infiniti claims that the 2.0-litre VC-Turbo engine provides performance comparable to a six-cylinder engine, with torque and efficiency closer to that of a diesel engine.
Using a complex linkage system the VC-Turbo engine can vary reach between the piston and the top of the combustion chamber allowing a variance between a high-performance suitable 8:1 compression ratio and a more efficient 14:1 rate.
Infiniti claims the new engine reduces traditional four-cylinder levels of noise and vibration, particularly when compared to a diesel engine, as well as being lighter than a comparable six-cylinder engine.
The 2.0-litre VC-Turbo is set to go into production from 2018, making it the first engine of its kind to reach production.
