Hyundai reveals its big Palisade SUV
Meet Hyundai’s Land Rover Discovery rival.
The South Korean brand has launched a new flagship SUV, the Palisade, at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show that’s bigger than the seven-seat Santa Fe.
The Palisade replaces the Santa Fe XL that was previously offered in the US, sitting at the pinnacle of its expanding SUV range. The South Korean brand has focused on increasing its SUV offerings in recent years, adding the city-sized Kona as well as the fuel-cell Nexo. During the launch the company confirmed another new SUV model will be added in 2019 but gave no details.
To underline its position as the biggest and best Hyundai SUV it comes equipped with eight-seats, or the option of a seven-seat layout with a pair of second-row captain’s chairs replacing the standard bench.
“This new Hyundai SUV is the ultimate family vehicle for practical, comfortable daily use and memory-making road trips whenever the appeal of the open road should beckon,” said Hyundai America vice president of planning, Mike O’Brien.
It features a bold styling treatment that continues the brand’s current SUV theme. The look includes a large cascade grille with relatively small LED headlights and taillights. Optional 20-inch alloy wheels add to its imposing appearance.
Power comes from a 217kW/355Nm 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine with eight-speed automatic and the choice of two- and four-wheel drive.
The bad news is while Hyundai Australia has expressed an interest in the Palisade joining the local range there is no plan to build it in right-hand drive.
