P-Platers could be replaced by robots in delivering your next pizza.

Ford has started a real-world trial for autonomous food vans in the Miami, teaming up with delivery service Postmates and 70 local businesses to operate a fleet of specially-equipped Transit Connect vehicles that are intended to appear as though they are driving themselves.

At this stage, the vehicles will be driven by an experienced driver, but those behind the wheel will not interact with customers as the pilot program is designed to provide research on how consumers work with an autonomous vehicle.

Instead, each of the cars will be fitted with a series of lockers in the cargo area. Restaurants, for example, can place a meal in either a chilled or hot box after entering a code on the side of the van. Those who ordered it will then receive a text message when the vehicle is approaching their destination with a code to retrieve it.

Once the code is entered, a series of audio prompts will alert the consumer about the process while the appropriate locker is opened and illuminated. Then, dinner is served...

Ford says the trial will expand to other regions across the USA in the future with a view to rolling-out a fully driverless delivery van network by 2021.
