Honda is charging ahead with its retro-styled electric hatch.

The Japanese car maker confirmed at the 2018 Geneva motor show that it would open the order books for its first fully-electric vehicle in 2019.

Honda first debuted the concept at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show in September where it was well received at the time for its too-cute looks. However, there is no indiacation on whether the concept's boxy proportions – something not present in Honda's current array of cars - will remain intact for the production version. Though if it does, the Urban EV should add some practicality in terms of interior space to the light car class.

The concept's lounge-like bench seats, extensive wood veneer trim and enormous wrap-around screen are expected to be toned-down as it progresses into production.

Size-wise the Urban EV is expected to be smaller than the Honda Jazz and is primarily aimed at the European market, where it will go on sale in 2019. No word on whether Honda will offer the bite-sized EV locally yet.

With the advent of a new electric platform for the Japanese marque, the Urban EV could spawn other electric cars in the future. The Japanese brand showcased a spin-off electric car, the Sports EV, at the 2018 Tokyo motor show that could follow the Urban EV into showrooms.

More details will be revealed closer to the car's launch in 2019, with a production verison possibly on display at the 2018 Paris motor show.
