Australia’s cheapest ute will launch with a special $18,990 driveaway deal for ABN holders as a single cab-chassis version of the Great Wall Steed.

Despite the price-cut compared to the cheapest dual cab version, the single cab Steed will come equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine good for 110kW and 310Nm, unlike the $22,990 driveaway (for ABN holders) dual cab which comes with petrol power as part of its price-leading offer.

Despite being billed as a member of the Steed family, the single cab version will carry unique front styling with a different bonnet, front guards, grille, bumper, and headlights compared to the dual cab version..

Standard equipment for the Steed single cab includes air conditioning, cloth seats, auto-dimming rear view mirror, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission with no automatic option available.

Mechanical specification extends to double wishbone independent front suspension, leaf-sprung rear suspension with a 1198kg payload, hydraulic power steering, and four-wheel disc brakes.

Both 4x2 and 4x4 versions will be offered, and both will carry a maximum 1700kg braked towing capacity. Safety features include dual airbags, ABS brakes, Bosch ESP stability control, hill hold control, and tyre pressure monitoring.

Fuel consumption for the 4x2 version is officially rated at 8.2 l/100km while the 4x4 carries an 8.6 l/100km consumption figure.

“Since we re-launched the Steed nameplate in 2016, we have received strong demand from dealers and customers for the return of the single cab version,” said Great Wall Motors Australia Chief Marketing Officer Tim Smith.

“With a mix of toughness, reliability and value for money, the single cab has always been a popular member of the Great Wall family. At its peak in 2012, the single cab version accounted for 55 per cent of all Great Wall utility sales,” he said.

Pricing for the 4x2 is set at $18,990 driveaway for ABN holders, the 4x4 model carries a $20,990 price tag for ABN holders, buyers without an ABN will pay $17,990 plus on-road costs for the 4x2 and 19,990 plus on-road costs for the 4x4.

The single cab Great Wall ute comes equipped with a locally-made aluminium dropside tray. The entire Steed range comes with a three-year, 100,000 kilometre warranty, three-years roadside assist, and a three year fixed-price service menu.
