Mercedes-AMG CEO, Tobias Moers, has taken to Twitter to set the ball rolling on the brand’s latest performance machine, the four-door GT Coupe.

Following the tweet, Mercedes-Benz USA also joined the party adding a its own official images, though full-body camouflage keeps most of the finer details at bay.

Somewhat confusingly the four-door model will be officially called the GT Coupe, leaving the existing two-door model coupe and roadster models to wear the GT name.

Mercedes-AMG previewed the styling of the new fastback four-door model at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and from what’s visible in the most recent prototype photos most of details from the GT Concept should make through to production.

As is typically the case, details including headlight and taillight internals will be modified slightly for the production car, and it’s clear that a more practical set of door handles and mirrors have taken the place of the flush handles and rear-view camera of the concept.

Under the sleek bodywork, the GT Coupe is expected to ride on a version of the platform that underpins models like the E-Class and CLS, as opposed to that of the two-door GT.

The change also means the GT Coupe will feature a longitudinal transmission behind the engine in place of the transaxle setup deployed by the two-seat variants.

AMG-only badging means the GT Coupe will join the existing AMG GT range, and the previous SLS as specific Mercedes-AMG performance products, with no mainstream Mercedes-Benz branded equivalents planned for the new model.

Under the bonnet the GT Coupe is expected to run a variety of engines tunes applied to the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 used in the existing GT, as well as AMG’s other model lines indicating that the power could start with a 420kW entry-level model alongside a more powerful 450kW tune.

Down the track a performance-boosting plug-in hybrid is also planned which could potentially boost power up to almost 600kW.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the GT Coupe will make its official debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
