Ford and Volkswagen could team-up to co-develop the next-generation Ranger and Amarok together.

The two companies have confirmed discussions are taking place on an alliance that will strengthen each company's fleet of commercial vehicles, including utes and vans.

While neither brand has outlined any details, each has signed a memorandum of understanding and will begin negotiations to "explore potential projects across a number of areas - including developing a range of commercial vehicles together to better serve the evolving needs of customers."

The potential alliance would not involve equity arrangements, including cross ownership stakes, Ford said in a statement.

“Ford is committed to improving our fitness as a business and leveraging adaptive business models – which include working with partners to improve our effectiveness and efficiency,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s president of Global Markets.

“This potential alliance with the Volkswagen Group is another example of how we can become more fit as a business, while creating a winning global product portfolio and extending our capabilities.

“We look forward to exploring with the Volkswagen team in the days ahead how we might work together to better serve the evolving needs of commercial vehicle customers – and much more.”

Dr. Thomas Sedran, Head of Volkswagen Group Strategy added, “Markets and customer demand are changing at an incredible speed. Both companies have strong and complementary positions in different commercial vehicle segments already.

"To adapt to the challenging environment, it is of utmost importance to gain flexibility through alliances. This is a core element of our Volkswagen Group Strategy 2025. The potential industrial cooperation with Ford is seen as an opportunity to improve competitiveness of both companies globally.”

Both Ford and Volkswagen already have large commercial vehicle fleets, with Ford recently winning Drive's inuagural Commercial Vehicle of the Year with its updated Transit Custom delivery van.

A potential deal to twin the Transit and Volkswagen's Transporter range together is a likely outcome of the alliance, while the possibility of co-developing the next-generation Ranger and Amarok together would see Ford gain access to Volkswagen's benchmark 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine and VW could adapt the Ranger Raptor for its own desert-busting lifestyle ute.

Drive will keep you updated on any progress with the Ford/VW alliance when more details come to light.
