Driverless taxis on trial in Dubai
Dubai will roll out its first self-driving taxi this year.
It’s part of the Dubai government’s plan to convert 25 per cent of total journeys in the country to autonomous transit by 2030.
Only one autonomous taxi will be used when the three month trial period begins at the end of the year.
The autonomous Mercedes-Benz E-Class will debut at the GITEX 2018 technology exhibition this week.
To ensure safety and security, a driver will be in the Mercedes over the trial period, which will only use one designated route in Dubai’s Silicon Oasis.
Once the trial period is over, the government will make a decision on whether or not to continue with autonomous taxis.
Like other self-driving vehicles, the E-Class will have sensors, cameras and radars to continually monitor surroundings and potential collisions.
