Renault Sport’s previous-gen Megane coupe took on a variety of forms including RS 250, 265 and 275 Cup, Cup +, Cup Premium, Cup Trophee, Trophy, Trophy +, Trophy 8:08, Trophy R, Monaco GP, Australian GP, Red Bull RB8 and more and now the Clio is set to rival the number of special editions available.
Go-fast versions of the Clio include much of the above, plus interesting creations in the striped Gordini RS, matte-finished Angel and Demon and race-inspired F1 Team R27. One owner at the 2017 Oz RenaultSport Nationals track day told me the rarest Renault in Australia was probably a vanilla Clio RS, as every car on the road seems to be a limited-edition special.
Based on the range-topping Clio RS 220 EDC Trophy, the new Clio RS 18 brings visual enhancements and some extra parts to the already quick offering. It features black bodywork, wheels and badges with a subtle flash of yellow as tribute to the brand’s traditional racing colours to beef -up its road presence.
An Akrapovic exhaust and Alcantara steering wheel add elements that set it apart from the herd while the Clio’s suspension, dual-clutch gearbox, brakes and 162kW/280Nm turbo engine are carried over from the regular Trophy.
Renault says it is too early to discuss prices for the limited-edition model, which arrives in Australia in the second half of 2018.
