This might be one of the first Chinese car makers to launch a solid attack on the established premium car market.

Revealing the third and aptly named 03 before its production debut next month, automaker Lynk & Co has rivals like Audi and Mercedes-Benz set in its sights.

Owned by Chinese automotive goliath Geely, the compact sedan benefits from sitting on Volvo’s newest Compact Modular Architecture platform. Harnessing the Swedish maker’s engine line-up, it will also bring a variety of drivetrains to market from petrol to electric power.

But while electrification is a key area for the brand, it will focus on delivering cutting-edge technology and connectivity that’s ‘permanently connected’ to compete against the likes of the upcoming Mercedes A-Class and its brand-new MBUX platform.

The model previewed shows a split-grille front-end with twin vertical LED headlights and dual exhaust outlets on the rear - likely the show car for the initial 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol that is tipped to be followed by a hybrid, larger 2.0-litre turbo sport and fully-electric model.

Lynk & Co plans to launch the Chinese-built 03 in its home market later this year after a debut at the Chengdu motor show. Expansion plans include Europe and the US and, while right-hand production is planned to go ahead at its second plant in Belgium in 2019 Australia has not yet been confirmed as a market for the Volvo spin-off.
