Volkswagen wants you to shack up in its Caddy.

The brand has confirmed it will bring the Caddy Beach special edition already available in Europe to Australia later this year – just in time for the summer holidays.

The special edition van is based on the five-seat Caddy Maxi Trendline but gets further additions such as a pop-up rear tent and folding seats that make way for a double-size bed.

“This marks our return to the campervan market in Australia,” said VW commercial vehicles marketing manager Nicholas Reid.

“With the iconic and ubiquitous Kombi van, Volkswagen forged a strong connection with travellers and explorers around the world. The Caddy Beach continues this tradition with the latest in engineering and technology.”

Power comes from a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor producing 92kW and 220Nm sent through a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. While not a rocket ship, anyone familiar with the classic VW Kombi might appreciate its leisurely ways.

Unlike the original Kombi safety includes automatic emergency braking with front assist, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist.

Standard inclusions on the Caddy Beach are bi-Xenon headlights, fog lights, 17-inch alloys, 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, black roof rails, tinted rear taillights, tinted passenger side windows and distinct ‘Beach’ decal down the side.

Camper-specific add-ons are the walkthrough rear tent, folding bed, tray tables for rear seat passengers, block-out window curtains and four storage bags for the side windows. VW also throws in two camp chairs, a table and rechargeable torch.

Available in six-colours, the Caddy Beach will be available from the fourth quarter of 2018 and is priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs.
