The Divo is another Bugatti supercar but with a twist.

The boutique French car maker is parting ways with what it knows as it gets ready to reveal an evolution of its flying Chiron, and rather than set its sights on blasting another vMax milestone Bugatti promises corner ability to match its speed.

"Happiness is not around the corner. It is the corner,” says Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann, as he keeps potential owners distracted from the $7.9 million they’ll part with to get one of the 40 Bugattis that can corner.

Based on the Chiron chassis, the Divo will be sucked onto the road with a new aerodynamically-efficient body focusing on downforce and a reduction of excess weight to make a lighter and more agile car.

It will be powered by the same 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing around 1100kW of power and an industrial-strength 1600Nm of torque, however, the added downforce and a revised gearbox will reduce the top speed from 420km/h to 385km/h.

Bugatti says its new car will “be light and nimble and will boast enormous downforce and g-forces,” with “significantly better handling” than the Chiron.

The car is named after French racing car driver Albert Divo who twice won the famously twisting Targa Florio in a Bugatti during the late 1920s.

Like the days of old, Bugatti compares its upcoming Divo to its beginnings as a bespoke coachbuilder, promising a strong design language and tailored performance. Its teaser image suggests as much, showing only the Divo name embroided onto Alcantara and set among unique materials.

"The Divo is made for corners," said Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann.

"With the Divo, we want to thrill people throughout the world. With this project, the Bugatti team has an opportunity to interpret the brand DNA in terms of agile, nimble handling in a significantly more performance-oriented way."

Bugatti will debut the Divo next month at the invitation-only The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, held during the annual Classic Car Week on the Monterey Peninsula in California.
