BMW has announced pricing for its most powerful M5 ever and thrown down the gauntlet to rivals.
Due to launch locally next year, BMW Australia has announced an M5 launch edition which will undercut the competition by up to almost $40,000. Priced from $199,990 before on-road costs when it goes on sale in the second quarter of 2018, the launch edition costs less than both the $209,611 Mercedes-AMG E63 and $239,611 E63 S.
However, the Bavarian-based automaker will only offer 50 examples of the launch edition to Australian customers with the price of the regular M5 yet to be announced.
Powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing a meaty 441kW and 750Nm of torque - a rise of 30kW and 70Nm over the previous model - the M5 won’t quite beat the barnstorming 450kW and 850Nm AMG E63 S.
However, it’s just as quick to the tonne, and the extra grunt allows the M5 to sprint from 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 305km/h.
BMW has also added a new M5-specific eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
Helping it put the extra power down is a move from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive, with BMW's latest adaptable xDrive system helping the M5 achieve higher levels of grip.
It’s the first time an M car has moved away from rear-wheel drive and mirrors its chief competitor, the Mercedes-AMG E63, which also features all-paw traction. The M5 also features a variety of drive modes which can switch off power to the front wheels altogether.
The new M5 gets all the latest safety technology from the regular 5-Series which includes; lane keep assist, front and rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, rear collision preventing, front and surround view cameras and autonomous emergency braking. The car also features semi-autonomous technology which allows the vehicle to steer, accelerate and brake for itself for up to 30 seconds.
The latest iteration of BMW iDrive6 infotainment system is accessed through a large 10.25-inch touchscreen with leather upholstery as standard throughout along with a leather wrapped M steering wheel, head-up display and wireless device charging.
