Audi spending over $60 billion on electric cars
Audi has hit the fast forward button on its development of future electric cars.
The German car maker announced this week it has pulled forward $20 billion in expenditure to create a wider range of e-tron-badged electric vehicles, as well as invest in factories and technologies that will help accelerate their development and production
Audi's new interim Bram Schot said the company will now spend more than $62 billion over the next five years, which will result in 20 electrified variants by 2025, half of which will be fully-electric e-tron models.
“This planning round bears a clear signature: We are taking a very systematic approach to electric mobility and will be much more focused in future," said Schot, who took over from Rupert Stadler after he was arrested by German police as part of an investigation into the diesel emissions scandal within teh Volkswagen Group.
"We are consistently prioritizing our resources for future-oriented products and services that are highly attractive and relevant to the market. With models such as the recently presented Audi e-tron GT concept, we want to electrify people again for Audi and at the same time be an agile and very efficient company.”
The e-tron GT Concept was revealed at the Los Angeles motor show last as a pre-production prototype, with confirmation it will be arrive in showrooms in 2020 alongside the e-tron Quattro SUV that lands next year.
Audi has also shown an e-tron supercar concept in the PB18 showcar at the Pebble Beach Concours in August, which could point to a battery-powered replacement for today's flagship R8.
Beyond the cars, Audi is pushing forward with the digitalization of its plants, and is expanding into new digital services such as “functions on demand”. It has also stated that its Transformation Plan will identify and discontinue "activities that are no longer relevant to customers".
