Audi is reportedly looking to revive the long-dormant Horch brand.

Originally one of the four brands that came together to create Auto Union, that became present day Audi, Horch hasn't appeared on a car since 1940. But Audi (which is latin for Horch) wants to resurrect the name to create a rival to the Mercedes-Maybach with an ultra-luxurious verison of the A8 sedan.

Company insiders have reportedly spilled the beans on Audi’s luxury car endeavours to indusrty journal Automotive News. Sources close to Audi say the company will resurrect the Horch name to create a top-of-the-line A8 long-wheelbase sedan within the next three years.

If the rumours are true, the Audi A8 Horch will go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Maybach models and potentially the likes of sister-brand Bentley. It will also source its power from the British luxury brand, with the report claiming the A8 Horch would likely be powered by Bentley's 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine.

According to the inside source, the W12 version is already market-ready, but has been placed on hold for reasons unknown.

If it goes ahead, the flagship model will also come with unique wheels and Horch badges to visually set it apart.

The history of Horch and Audi are intertwined as August Horch was the founder of both the companies. The current four-ring Audi badge was created by Auto Union to symoblize the merger between Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer in 1932.
