The ultimate version of Aston Martin’s Valkyrie hypercar has the potential to be faster than any race car on earth.

That’s the view of Red Bull Racing chief Christian Horner, who told Racefans.net Aston Martin’s new machine has the potential to eclipse the record-breaking 5m19s lap of the Nurburgring set by Timo Bernhard in the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo last week.

Acknowledging the modified Porsche Le Mans racer is faster than any F1 car at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, Horner said he was “not sure” a grand prix machine could lower the Porsche’s benchmark.

“But I think that the Valkyrie, certainly the track version of the Valkyrie, could be a contender,” he said.

Aston Martin’s ultimate machine features a naturally aspirated V12 linked to a hybrid system capable of producing enormous thrust. Uncompromising bodywork sculpted by legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey might give the machine enough downforce to challenge lap records set by the Porsche 919.

Talk of the Nuburgring lap swirled around the Formula One paddock at the Austrian Grand Prix, where Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said the Porsche was “just unbelievable, it’s like flying a spaceship around the track”.

“It would be interesting to put a Formula One car on the Nordschleife and see what it does,” Wolff said.

“But it’s pretty more my spin than a realistic idea that somebody’s going to finance.”
