In the face of newer competitors Alfa Romeo is set to rework its mid-engined, carbon fibre 4C coupe and roadster.

The move is designed to reinvigorate the bespoke lightweight sports car in the face of a revised Porsche Cayman and Boxster, and all-new Alpine A110, both of which have surfaced since the 4C’s initial release.

In an interview with Autocar, Alfa Romeo chief technical officer Roberto Fedeli confirmed that the 4C would come in for an extensive rework, the results of which will surface in late 2018 before going on sale in 2019.

Amongst the changes the revised model will feature changes to its steering and suspension, and may possibly introduce a new engine to take the place of the 177kW 1.75-litre four cylinder turbo motor currently used.

“We are coming back to Formula 1 and we need the 4C to be our halo car,” Fedeli told Autocar.

Enthusiasts holding out for a manual version of the 4C will be disappointed however, with Fedeli also explaining that a lack of demand for a traditional manual transmission in Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Ferrari performance cars meant that such models would continue to be auto-only.

More details of the updated 4C are expected to emerge in the lead up to the updated version, but with added pressure in the form of Renault’s 185kW Alpine A110 mid-engined coupe Alfa Romeo can’t afford to let its stripped-down coupe and roadster go untouched.
