Mitsubishi's new Outlander PHEV hybrid SUV has broken cover ahead of its official unveiling at the 2018 Geneva motor show in March.

Highlighting the update is a new powertrain with the Japanese marque ditching the current 87kW/186Nm 2.0-litre petrol unit and instead pairing its electric motors with a bigger capacity 2.4-litre engine.

While no power figures for the new engine have been revealed, Mitsubishi has stated that the new engine produces more torque. The carmaker also claims to have increased its electric motor and battery outputs by 10 per cent.

Along with the revised drivetrain, the plug-in hybrid has received a facelift with highlights including new LED headlights, a re-worked grille, fresh 18-inch alloy wheels and a larger rear spoiler.

Inside, the PHEV scores new quilted leather upholstery, rear air conditioning vents and new front seats.

The Outlander PHEV in the revealed specification is for the European and Japanese markets and Mitsubishi Australia is currently considering several of the features for future PHEV variants, but will confirm full specification closer to the car's launch in the second half of 2018.
