Volvo looks to exceed its competition with its new compact luxury SUV.
Built on the Swedish brand's new compact modular platform, the new XC40 small SUV launches locally in April where it will compete against some stiff competition from the likes of the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque.
The XC40 has been lobbed into the more expensive end of the market compared to its rivals with the point of entry into the range kicking off at $47,990 before on-road costs. However, Volvo does forgo a cheaper front-wheel drive variant like its competitors instead offering more higher-specified, all-wheel drive vehicle only.
Volvo is launching with a two-tier model range with each grade having the choice of either a petrol or diesel powertrain.
The entry level T5 Momentum is powered by a 185kW/350Nm turbocharged petrol unit and is paired to an eight-speed automatic that drives all four wheels.
For an extra $3000 – or $50,990 – buyers can step into the D4 Momentum that comes with the 140kW/400Nm twin-turbocharged diesel engine that features the same transmission set-up.
Top-spec R-design variants comes with the same engine combinations and are priced from $54,990 in petrol guise and $57,990 when equipped with the diesel powertrain.
As befitting a Volvo, the XC40 comes with a decent amount of safety kit such as autonomous emergency braking, cross traffic alert with auto braking while a 360-degree camera is optional. The XC40 also includes the brand's semi-autonomous driving technology as featured in the larger XC60 and XC90 SUVs.
All XC40s come with Volvo's latest Sensus infotainment system and they are also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Volvo has also decided to offer a limited number of full-fruit launch editions across all model grades.
For an extra $5000 the Momentum grade XC40s can have a sunroof, heated front seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows, upgraded stereo, 360-degree camera, park assist, keyless entry, electric tailgate, alarm and leather upholstery added.
R-design launch edition models cost an extra $1750 and score a sunroof, tinted windows, heated front seats, alarm, park assist, 360-degree camera, Harman Kardon stereo and adaptive cruise control.
The Volvo XC40 is available in showrooms from April, 2018.
