Suzuki has brought its feisty Swift Sport light hot hatch into line with the rest of the Swift range, introducing the new performance model seven month after the local launch of mainstream variants.

Headlining the new Swift Sport is a new turbocharged 1.4-litre engine, taking the place of the previous naturally aspirated 1.6-litre model that preceded it, with a minor power increase of 3kW to 103kW, but a much more substantial torque boost of 70Nm for a total of 230Nm much earlier in the rev range.

The engine is broadly the same as that which powers the S-Cross and Vitara S Turbo but with a remapped torque curve to provide more engaging performance.

Suzuki’s latest generation ‘Heartect’ chassis architecture, shared with cars like the Baleno and Ignis, also brings a weight saving of 80 kilograms compared to the previous generation Sport.

A revised version of the previous six-speed manual transmission carries over for the 2018 Swift Sport, with a shorter gear throw and upgraded clutch to cope with the addition torque. Automatic buyers now have access to a six-speed torque converter auto in place of the previous CVT automatic.

The generational change also bring the latest safety technology from the regular Swift to the Sport including autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, distance-keeping radar cruise control, automatic high beam, and ‘weaving alert’ driver fatigue detection. Six airbags, stability control, auto lights and wipers, and ABS brakes are also standard.

Inside the Swift Sport varies from lesser variants thanks to deeply sculpted sports front seats featuring fixed headrests, embossed Sport logos and red contrast stitching. Other interior detail changes include red-to-black geometric-patterned interior accents, a flat-bottomed steering wheel with perforated leather, aluminum pedals, and a red-faced tacho.

Infotainment comes via a 7.0-inch touchscreen display and like most of Suzuki’s latest models is packed with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, standard satellite navigation, Bluetooth and (wired) iPod compatibility, plus steering wheel audio controls.

On the outside the Swift Sport stands apart with unique front and rear bumpers featuring a large mesh-filled single frame grille at the front and diffuser-style rear bumper with dual exhaust outlets. A full skirt package in black carbon-look completes the look.

The Swift Sport rolls on 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels shod in 195/50 R17 tyres, with handling via MacPherson Strut front and torsion beam rear suspension enhanced with thicker stabiliser bars, teflon stabiliser bar mount bushings, and Monroe shock absorbers.

Braking is via 16-inch ventilated front discs and 15-inch solid rear discs, with upgraded high-friction pads to cope with the extra speed potential of the new lighter weight and more powerful engine compared to the previous model.

2018 Suzuki Swift Sport Pricing

Prices for the new-generation Swift Sport rise by $1000 compared to the previous generation, which Suzuki claims is more than offset by the added standard safety equipment.

Swift Sport manual $25,490

Swift Sport automatic $27,490

Manufacturer’s list price excluding on-road costs.
