Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced the pricing for four-cylinder variants of its highly anticipated X-Class dual cab ute, and while the new pickup carries an expected price premium it may surprise with its closeness to similarly-equipped rival dual cabs.

Deliveries are expected to begin in April 2018 and the available model line will be slightly less comprehensive than some ute ranges with 13 distinct variants to kick things of.

The opening price for the new X-Class starts from $45,490 plus on-road costs, which puts it roughly $10,000 above the price of mainstream rivals like the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and the Nissan Navara on which it is based.

At that level the X220d comes in what Benz call Pure specification with a 120kW/403Nm single-turbo 2.3-litre diesel engine, six-speed manual and rear wheel drive in a cab-chassis body.

The X220d Pure is also available with a ute tub, which Mercedes officially designates as its ‘Load Bed’ body from $46,400.

The X220d Pure is also available with what Mercedes-Benz call “engageable all-wheel drive” dubbed 4Matic, with a choice of cab-chassis or pickup bed. All X220d models will be available only with a manual transmission.

The Pure specification is designed more as a working vehicle, as it comes with unpainted black bumpers, 17-inch steel wheels, conventional halogen headlights, cloth interior trim, vinyl flooring, manual air conditioning and a basic audio system.

It does, however, feature a reverse camera, Active Brake Assist (also known as forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking), lane keeping assistance and tyre pressure monitors. A Plus Pack is available on all Pure variants which includes adjustable load rails in the tray and parking sensors.

The workhorse Pure model is also available with a more powerful twin-turbo version of the 2.3-litre engine producing 140kW and 450Nm in X250d guise. The more powerful model also adds the option of a seven-speed automatic for $2900 and is available exclusively with 4matic all wheel drive in either cab-chassis or ute bodies.

Mid-range Progressive trim is also available on the X250d which ups the standard equipment levels to include body-coloured bumpers, 17-inch alloy wheels, Garmin satellite navigation, higher-grade cloth trim, carpet flooring, rain-sensing wipers, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment and adjustable load rails in the tray to help secure items.

An optional Comfort Package is also available adding electric adjustment for the front seats, faux leather trim and dual-zone climate control while a Style Package adds LED headlights, partial LED tail lights, an electric rear window, tinted glass, side steps, roof rails and 18-inch alloys.

At the top of the range the X250d Power removes the cab chassis option but goes all-out with premium fittings including standard 18-inch alloys, chrome exterior highlights, LED headlights, faux leather trim for the dash and faux leather/suede seats, electrically-adjustable front seats, a more comprehensive infotainment system, keyless start and dual-zone climate control.

Safety specification is also upgraded with a 360-degree camera and park assist as standard.

A Style Package for the Power specification can be ordered, which adds the electric rear window, tinted glass, side steps, roof rails and even larger 19-inch alloys.

A Winter Package is available on all model grades too, which adds heated front seats and headlight washers.

Pricing for the X250d Power is surprisingly close to top-tier four-cylinder ute rivals starting at $61,600 with a six-speed manual or $64,500 with a seven-speed automatic.

An extensive range of personalisation options will also be available depending on specification, with an unrivalled range of options including a choice of interior leather trim colours, headlining colours, and either wood or aluminium interior elements for Power models.

More powerful V6-powered X350d models will arrive later in 2018, which are expected to push into new boundaries for dual-cab pick-ups with a price tag of around $80,000.
