A bold new face immediately identifies the facelifted Sonata and leads a raft of changes including revised interior details, a new infotainment system, and an eight-speed automatic transmission paired with Hyundai’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.
Revisions to the range see the previous three-variant lineup pared back to just two variants for 2018 starting with the entry-level Active from $30,990 (plus on-road costs) and high-spec Premium from $45,490 (plus on-road costs).
The refreshed Sonata wears Hyundai’s new Cascading Grille, redesigned headlights, and a new bumper design up front, while the rear end also picks up a new bumper, slimmer tail lights, and a new, cleaner bootlid design that shifts the rear number plate down into the bumper.
Pricing for the Active rises by $500 compared to the outgoing model, offset by additional features including keyless entry with push-button start, Smart Boot hands-free boot opening, dual-zone climate control, and a new 8.0-inch infotainment system incorporating satellite navigation, Apple carPlay and Android Auto functionality.
Under the bonnet the Sonata Active carries over its 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with 138kW of power and 241Nm of torque, linked to a six-speed automatic. Fuel consumption is rated at 8.3L/100km.
Standard equipment extends to cloth seat trim, leather appointed steering wheel and gear knob, auto headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Premium pricing remains unchanged, although specification changes include LED headlights, a wireless charge pad for mobile devices, Driver Attention Alert fatigue monitoring, and the Active’s new infotainment system.
Externally the Sonata Premium is differentiated by 18-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, a mesh grille insert, black detailing on the mirrors, lower front bumper, headlight bezels and DRL surrounds, with dark chrome used on the grille surround, door handles, and waist moulding.
A more potent 2.0-litre turbocharged engine powers the Sonata Premium, with 180kW of power and 353Nm of torque. A new eight-speed automatic transmission has also been added, reducing fuel consumption by 0.7 l/100km to 8.5 l/100km.
Premium standard features also include leather seat trim, rain-sensing wipers, panoramic sunroof, sports pedals, heated and ventilated front seats, powered driver’s seat with memory, electronic park brake, heated power-folding exterior mirrors, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Hyundai has also used the update to revise the turbocharged engine’s service schedule, which moves from six month/7500km intervals to a 12 month/10,000km servicing as part of Hyundai’s iCare capped price servicing system with five years costing $1455 (or 1425 for the 2.4-litre model with 12 month/15,000km intervals).
Safety features for the Sonata Active include Electronic stability control, six-airbags, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, a rear-view camera with dynamic guide lines, and reverse park sensors. The Sonata Premium adds blind spot monitoring, lane change assist and lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and front park sensors.
