While Hyundai’s recent attention has been focused on its all-new i30 N hot hatch, the South Korean brand hasn’t forgotten about its bread-and-butter models.

The i30 range has been given an overhaul for 2018, with new models and optional equipment to try and increase its appeal. The i30 is the third best-selling small car in 2018 but is falling behind its arch-rivals, the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3.

The updated 2018 i30 range sees the introduction of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, previous reserved for the cheaper Go and Active models, now added to the formerly diesel-only Elite and Premium models. The engine is exclusively mated to a six-speed automatic transmission in the Elite and Premium.

The other major change is the availability of Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of active safety features on the Go and Active models. Previously the entry-level i30 was unable to get the brand’s latest safety technology. SmartSense is a $1750 option but brings with it autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring with lane change assist, lane keeping assist, driver attention alert, rear cross traffic alert and active cruise control.

It also adds an electronic parking brake, a 4.2-inch TFT colour screen in the instrument cluster, rear air-conditioning vents, power folding exterior mirrors and chrome-effect front grille insert.

The SR and SR Premium models are largely unchanged, still powered exclusively by the company’s 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. However, the SR Premium and Premium models do get a new seven-speaker Infinity premium sound system as standard.
