Ford's pony car breaks into a gallop.

The American brand is launching the Mustang Bullitt in Australia from October, 2018. The uprated performance coupe pays homage to the 1968 Mustang Fastback from Steve McQueen's iconic film.

Priced from $73,688 before on-road costs - roughly $8000 more than the regular GT - the Bullitt Mustang is limited to just 700 examples in Australia.  The limited edition is set to extend the Mustang's popularity, with the pony car currently the country's favourite sports car and Ford's highest selling passenger vehicle.

“It further builds on the Mustang story in this country as we respond to enthusiasm for even more choice, additional features and personalisation across the line-up. Australians are looking for Mustangs that really stand out, and Mustang Bullitt really makes a statement.” Said Ford Australia chief, Graeme Whickman.

Ford has lifted power from the 5.0-litre V8 by 39kW and 26Nm for the Bullitt compared to the stock V8-powered GT which brings total outputs to 345kW and 556Nm.

The blue oval has managed to squeeze extra power out of its Coyote V8 engine by adding an open air induction system and intake manifold, Ford Racing air filter and a powertrain control module borrowed from the Shelby Mustang GT350.

Ford has equipped the Bullitt with a six-speed manual transmission exclusively. The manual transmission has been reworked to include a rev-matching system for smoother downshifts. Ford has also added an active valve exhaust for a mightier roar.

The Bullitt is available with an exclusive dark green paintwork that harkens back to the original movie Mustang. Other exterior touches include gloss-black 19-inch Torq Thrust-style alloy wheels with red calipers and Brembo brakes.

Mirroring the recent Mustang updates the Bullitt comes with a greater range of safety equipment including autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and auto high beam.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Ford's Sync3 infotainment system, are accessed through an 8.0-inch screen that also features a reversing camera. A 12.3-inch digital dash adds to the high-tech interior.

Inside the Bullitt Mustangs feature Bullitt scuff plates, green stitching on the dash, door trims and heated and cooled front seats, white cue-ball gear-shift knob and unique stitched gearshift boot.

Every Mustang Bullitt will come with an individual numbered plaque that is located on the passenger's side of the dashboard.
