BMW has announced that its new X3 M40i will arrive in Australia to sit atop the brand's mid-size luxury SUV range.
With first deliveries set to arrive from July, 2018, the sporty SUV will be priced from $99,900 before on-road costs, which puts it on par with the Audi SQ5 3.0 TFSI ($99,611) and slightly less than the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 ($102,111).
Power for the performance SUV comes from a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine that generates 265kW and 500Nm and is matched to an eight-speed auto that drives all four wheels. The power figures put it in between the 260kW/500Nm Audi and the 270kW/520Nm Mercedes.
Other performance focused touches include paddle shifters, launch control, adaptive M suspension with multiple damper modes and M Sport brakes with blue calipers.
Exterior touches include massive 21-inch alloy wheels, a M aerodynamics package with a roof mounted wing and silver-grey exterior elements along with black chrome tailpipes. Adaptive LED headlights, LED fog lights and black exterior trim and roof rails complete the look.
Inside is highlighted by leather upholstery, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and BMW's connected services , a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo, 12.3-inch digital instrument display and ambient lighting.
Safety gear extends to active cruise control, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, front cross traffic alert and a 360-degree camera.
