Monster Motorbike coming to 2008 Melbourne Motor Show

If you are on the look-out for something unique at this years Melbourne Motor Show, then I reckon that this probably ‘takes the cake’. Dubbed the Monster Motorbike, it is the creation of Ray Baumann and was designed and built in Perth.

The Monster Motorbike weighs a massive 13.6 tonnes - around 10 times the weight of a family car - and is used to perform simple tasks such as crushing cars and caravans.

Its Detroit Diesel engine and six-speed Allison automatic come from a prime mover, and it uses a two-speed Eaton differential from a road train to drive a massive chain on each side of the rear wheel.

The wheels and tyres are borrowed from an 80 tonne Caterpillar front end loader and are well suited to car crushing, at almost three metres high and well over a metre wide.

Ray Baumann is a bit of new generation Aussie Evil Knievel who, after a stint driving road trains, turned his attention to setting records for jumping vehicles over other vehicles. The Monster Motorbike brings together elements from both of Ray’s occupations.

"We did stunt driving for quite a few years, broke a few records and broke my back a few times, so this is a way of taking a bit more care. Now we crush things, which is definitely less risky than jumping them - we still do jump things, but not at the Melbourne Motor Show," said Ray.

There is nothing like breaking your back a few times to get you to slow down…

The question that first springs to mind concerning the Monster Motorbike is…why? Ray is obviously a hardcore mix of dare-devil and entertainer and as we all know, the show must go on!
