Mitsubishi Triton GLX 2.5-litre diesel

Mitsubishi has released a 2.5-litre diesel version of their two-wheel drive Triton commercial range in Australia. The Triton has been available in Europe with a 2.5-litre diesel for some time and MMAL are now introducing the 2.5-litre Common-Rail Direct-Injection equipped model to Australia as an economical two-wheel drive utility option.

The new 2.5-litre diesel equipped Tritons will be the cheapest way into a diesel powered Triton with prices for the single-cab model starting at $22,990 and the dual cab $28,990. The budget diesel model should continue the Tritons winning ways with Mitsubishi enjoying record sales of the Triton range.

“Over the last twelve months, Mitsubishi has enjoyed a 40 per cent sales increase in the two-wheel drive utility segment, thanks to the arrival of our 2.4-litre petrol engine variant early last year. With today’s high fuel prices and the increased focus on environmental efficiencies, the new 2.5-litre diesel Triton model offers yet another economical option to our two-wheel drive utility customers.” Robert McEniry, president and chief executive officer of Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd.

The 2.5-litre diesel features 16-valves an intercooler and turbo. Power isn’t huge at just 100kW but peak torque is a relatively impressive 314Nm all of which is available from just 2000rpm. Under-stressed as it is (Nissans 2.5-litre Navara produces 150kW), this is one diesel that should go the distance. A five-speed manual is standard with an optional four-speed automatic available.

The Triton has proven itself to be one of the safest vehicles in its class with a Euro NCAP rating of four stars and the entry level 2.5-litre diesel model isn’t short on safety kit. Standard safety features include ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, dual front driver SRS airbags and seat-belt pre-tensioners.

In addition to the safety features, standard kit includes a limited-slip differential, air-conditioning, power windows, remote central locking with keyless entry, variable intermittent windscreen wipers and 16-inch steel wheels. For the first time, the Triton sees factory fitted cruise control available and fitted as standard to the 2.5-litre diesel.

Available in two guises, a single cab or a double cab the new 2.5-litre diesel fits neatly into the Triton range. The 4X2 range is rounded out with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine option while the 4x4 range is available with a 3.5-litre V6 petrol or 3.2-litre CDI diesel along with cab-chassis, pick-up or dual cab body styles.
