The US arm of Mitsubishi has today announced a new mid-range version of its high-performance Evolution sedan, dubbed Lancer Evolution X Special Edition, or SE.

Entering the line-up between the Evolution and Evolution MR models, the SE was conceived to offer buyers a little more of the MR's features, without the range-topper's price tag.

Power and performance remain unchanged for the mid-spec model. As with the existing line-up, the SE features the same turbo-charged 217kW and 366Nm 2.0 litre four-cylinder DOHC engine.

It also features the MR's TC-SST dual-clutch transmission, offering the same Normal, Sport and Super-Sport driving modes. The MR's Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs are also in play.

Exterior styling, a cross between Evolution and Evolution MR models, is where the differences are most apparent.

The SE gets the regular model's front bumper and 18-inch wheels, while the rear end sees the MR diffuser but the utter absence of a wing. Inside, the regular cloth Recaros sit in place of the MR's leather seats.

With the US being a left-hand-drive market, the SE is unlikely to be made available in Australia. But watch this space.
