The MINI is set to undergo its most significant styling overhaul since the brand was re-launched under the BMW umbrella in 2001, according to reports out of Europe this week.

Neither MINI nor its owner have confirmed plans for a design revolution for the British badge, but BMW Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk is understood to have described the next-generation MINI styling as "a bigger design leap than the last one," referring to the updated range launched in 2007.

Speaking with UK magazine Autocar, van Hooydonk reportedly confirmed that MINI's chief designer Anders Warming will start the new generation MINI design from a clean sheet.

The MINI interior, with its trademark centre-mounted speedometer, is also expected to be overhauled.

Acknowledging the importance of MINI's iconic styling however, van Hooydonk added that Warming will need to balance the square-one starting point against the fact that the MINI is the brand's core model, "like BMW's 3, 5 and 7 series rolled into one."

As for what we can expect from the new MINI's styling, that 'clean sheet' approach may also see a few design features carry over from the recent MINI Paceman concept (pictured), itself scheduled to enter production in the next couple of years.
