MINI has lifted the lid on its new range of sports-focused diesel models, including the three-door Cooper SD and Cabrio SD, the high-riding Countryman SD and the Clubman SD wagon.

The online debut of the brand's four diesel performers follows spy photos obtained last year, sparking speculation that MINI would move to compete with the likes of Volkswagen's Golf GTD.

Drawing its styling inspiration from the MINI Cooper S models, the SD range joins the range as the top-shelf diesel offering in each model's line-up.

Power for all four SD models is provided by a version of the 1.6 litre diesel engine powering the regular D variants, its capacity boosted to 2.0 litres and power to 106kW and 305Nm - an increase of 26kW and 65Nm respectively.

All SD variants are equipped with brake energy regeneration technology, along with an auto stop/start system, Shift Point display, electric power steering, a diesel particulate filter and an oxidation catalytic converter.

The 2.0 litre diesel is mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Cooper SD offers a 0-100km/h sprint time of 8.1 seconds - down from 9.9 seconds for the Cooper D - and fuel consumption is listed at 4.3 l/100km. Its convertible sibling covers the run in 8.7 seconds, using 4.5 l/100km of diesel.

The longer Clubman SD will manage the 0-100km/h sprint in 8.6 seconds, with fuel consumption listed at 4.4 l/100km.

The SD version of the brand-new Countryman will hit 100km/h in 9.3 seconds for the front-wheel-drive version. The all-wheel-drive version gives little away, reaching 100km/h in 9.4 seconds.

Fuel consumption for the Countryman SD is listed at 4.6 l/100km in FWD form, and 4.9 in AWD form.

Australia

Speaking with TMR today, MINI Australia's Lucy McLellan confirmed that the SD range, and the new more powerful diesel engine, is on the company's radar.

"This is an engine we’re looking at very closely for Australia," Ms McLellan said. "However, a decision on timing and which models, if any, we will introduce is still to be made."
