Who says MINI drivers get to have all the fun? Well, maybe they do and soon they’ll be able to boast about driving Australia's most fuel-efficient car, too.

In January we reported the details of the 2009 MINI Cooper D, now today MINI has announced its arrival on the Australian market.

The Cooper D sips just 3.9 litres of fuel per 100km and emits 104g/km of CO2, making both figures the lowest of any car in Australia.

Worse news still for those companies relying on hybrid technology to pull them though, the MINI undercuts them with no such complexities.

Another area the Cooper D undercuts its hybrid opposition is price, available from just $33,750 with a six-speed manual or an extra $2,350 for the six-speed automatic.

That’s not to say the MINI is a basic package. The 1.6 litre diesel engine in the Cooper D comes with Auto Start Stop, which cuts the engine when the car is stopped at traffic lights or in traffic jams, and brings it back online in an instant.

Brake Energy Regeneration is also included, converting kinetic energy from the braking system into usable power.

MINI refers to these features collectively as MINIMALISM, a version of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

Other economy-enhancing inclusions include Shift Point Display - indicating when to change gears for the greatest economy and on-demand engine ancillaries such as electric power steering and a switchable water pump.

The 1.6 litre engine in the Cooper D puts out 80kW and a stout 240Nm of torque available between 1750 and 2000 rpm with 70 percent available from just 1250 rpm.

The engine also utilizes an ‘overboost’ feature which adds an additional 20Nm of grunt when demanded to help out with the likes of swifter overtaking.

To top it all off the MINI Cooper D is the fastest accelerating diesel in its engine-size class.

With a fuel tank of 40 litres the Cooper D has a potential range of 1025 km between fills allowing a Sydney to Melbourne trip without a fuel stop.

Exernally the Cooper D can be identified by a larger power dome in the bonnet to accommodate the intake plumbing and a larger air intake in the front bumper to feed fresh air to the heat exchanger.

The full range of MINI customisation options for interior and exterior will also be available.

Recommended Retail Price: MINI Cooper D from $33,750
