In an interesting development earlier this week Mercedes-Benz announced their rather odd DiesOtto engine. A petrol powered engine that uses diesel technology, the DiesOtto is quite unique.
The DiesOtto is a 1.8-litre four cylinder engine that features direct petrol injection, turbo-charging, variable compression and controlled auto ignition which MB describe as a ?highly efficient combustion process similar to that of a diesel?.
The by-product of this wizardry is 177Kw and 399Nm all from an engine that is said to use less than 6 L/100km! The really interesting part is that this level of economy wasn?t achieved in a small MB passenger car like the C-Class but in a vehicle around the size of the current S-Class?
Mercedes have also confirmed that they are giving their attention to a full hybrid option for their diesel and petrol vehicles. At least these will be hybrids with a bit of a spring in their step.
The days of standing in that oily patch of diesel at the service station may be drawing to a close for consumers looking for diesel economy and efficiency without the mess.
