RUMOURS LAST YEAR said Mercedes-Benz was working on a production version of its ConceptFascination 'shooting brake', to slot into the E-Class range.

Reports today suggest Mercedes is instead developing a CLS wagon inspired by the Fascination.

Due for replacement in the next year, the CLS made waves in the new four-door coupe arena when it launched in 2004. If reports of a wagon version for the next generation CLS are true, Mercedes will be hoping for a similar response.

The rumoured forthcoming CLS wagon is expected to closely mirror the Fascination's styling, albeit mixed with whatever next generation features the new CLS will bear.

Spy photos captured in November last year offered the first look at the new CLS, expected to launch late this year as a 2011 model, with (yet) more premium positioning, enabling Mercedes-Benz to launch a second smaller four-door coupe at a lower price point.

Little is known on the engine front, but V6 and V8 options are likely, while a hybrid model based on the S400 BlueHybrid technology is expected to debut after launch.
