Since late last year, Mercedes-Benz has been spied testing a convertible variant of its upcoming SLS AMG supercar, confirming rumours of an SLS Roadster.

The lightly-camouflaged test mules appear to be undergoing final stages of pre-production testing, with the black vinyl cladding hiding what appears to be a production-ready body.

The finished product could be in Mercedes showrooms early next year, featuring conventional doors (rather than the gullwing doors of the hardtop) and a fabric folding roof.

Although not confirmed, the Roadster's engine and drivetrain layout will likely focus on AMG's new 5.5 litre V8, rather than the 6.2 litre V8 featured in the hardtop SLS AMG.

Of course, performance numbers may be blunted by the extra weight of the convertible roof mechanism and the additional body strengthening.
