It’s been a big problem for a while now…what to get when a zillion dollar Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren just doesn’t pull the looks like your neighbours Veyron. Well the good folk at McLaren have come up with a solution by lopping the top off their SLR and creating the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster. Lets just call it the ‘Roadster’.

With the exeption of aluminium engine frames the body is made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) which ensures it carries over the same excellent torsional rigidity possessed by the coupe. Combined with the race inspired chassis (McLaren have an F1 team remember) the new coupe is apparently blessed with superb handling characteristics as well as the sort of ride that you are more likely to find in a car with a roof.

Another benefit of the super strong CFRP chassis is its ability to absorb energy in an accident situation which ensures a high level of occupant safety.

The Roadster has a fully retractable top that will raise or lower in less than 10 seconds and being fabric they have been able to achieve an exceptionally beautiful minimalist look. The new roof material is available in three colours and is said to resist all types of weather which is a good thing to know about the roof of a car this expensive.

Now getting onto the good stuff…the Roadster is powered by an AMG V8 compressor engine that is good for 460kW and over 330 km/h, which should be enough to blow your hair back except that the roadster has been “optimized for high speeds’ with regard to handling, aero-acoustics and aerodynamics. So you should be able to go quickly with the roof down while having a conversation with your passenger all without getting a hair out of place.

The monster motor is combined with the AMG Speedshift R 5-speed automatic transmission which although being 3-gears off the pace these days still helps to get the McMerc Roadster from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds.

Of course it comes with all of the good bits like a premium Bose stereo, dual-zone air-conditioning and carbon-fibre bucket seats that can be customized with different sized seat padding to suit the driver or passenger. You also get a multi-function sports steering wheel and flappy paddle gear shifters. It can all be yours in September if you rob a bank and flee to Europe.
