Mercedes-Benz has today announced it will launch a production version of its 'Shooting Brake' concept, just days after BMW confirmed a 2013 launch for its Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid supercar. There might just be a game of one-upmanship afoot.

Based on the recently-launched CLS sedan, the aptly-named CLS Shooting Brake will be built alongside the likes of the CLS Sedan and the E-Class at Mercedes' production plant in Singdelfingen, Germany.

"This car is based on the great tradition of a stylish, cultivated sportiness which has always characterised the great Mercedes Coupés, and it [the Shooting Brake] takes this unique legacy an exciting step further," Mercedes-Benz' Joachim Schmidt said.

At the same time it points the way towards the future design idiom of Mercedes-Benz."

Although the luxury carmaker is keeping mum on the sporty wagon's finer details, power options are likely to come from the same petrol and diesel engines available with the new CLS.

The sedan range opens with the 150kW 2.1 litre four-cylinder diesel CDI BlueEfficiency model, topping out with a 305kW petrol V8.

As expected, an AMG version of the CLS is well into development, as our recent spy photos show, and a CLS Shooting Brake AMG is a likely contender for the model's flagship position.
