Recent murmurs concerning a strategic alliance between Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz are now escalating into suggestions that there will be a full financial partnership between the two manufacturers.

Autocar are reporting that Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin are looking to become stake holders in their respective businesses. Mercedes-Benz are looking to buy a big chunk of Aston and the rumoured deal would see Aston inherit a fairly hefty 7 percent interest in Daimler AG.

The cross channel love affair is blossoming as each manufacturer is able to bring to the table, something the other needs. In the case of Aston, alliances will need to be forged with major component suppliers as previous owner Ford slowly severs ties. While Mercedes-Benz are planning a lightweight aluminium platform for the next generation SL and Aston have the technology and experience to help in this regard.

Then of course, there is the much publicized rift between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren who paired to design and produce the SL based McLaren SLR. The SLR has proven to be on of those over-expensive supercars that miss the mark – much to the chagrin of Mercedes-Benz, who have been telling McLaren “we told you so” for some time now. All of which, neatly leaves the door open for some Aston Martin involvement in the development of any planned SLR replacement.

Now, a V12 AMG powered Aston Martin may be sacrilegious to the devoted follower, but it would sound insane and comprehensively whip the butt of the current Aston range, and that has to be a step in the right direction!
