On the tail of spy photos obtained last month of the new C-Class Coupe testing in Europe, reports this week suggest the new car could be joined by an AMG variant.

Taking on the likes of the BMW M3 Coupe and the Audi RS5, the new model - likely to be named the C63 AMG Coupe - is to debut late next year alongside its 'regular' siblings, according to Britain's Autocar.

Oddly, the report claims the C63 AMG Coupe would draw power from Mercedes' 6.2 litre V8. However, should it appear late 2011, with the 6.2 litre V8 being retired in favour of AMG's new 400kW 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8, it would seem unlikely that Mercedes would look to the older engine.

An AMG Performance package will also likely be offered with the hot coupe, producing 420kW and 900Nm of torque.

As with the recently launched S63 AMG, the C63 AMG Coupe would likely be offered with the brand's SpeedShift MCT seven-speed automatic transmission as an option, the combination launching the 'regular' model to 100km/h in 4.0-4.5 seconds.

Little else is known at this stage; certainly no word from Mercedes as to the accuracy of the report.
