The upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell may be out of reach for most, but the German carmaker has today revealed a slightly more affordable vessel for its electric vehicle technology: the 2011 A-Class E-Cell.

The debut of the A-Class E-Cell follows the appearance of the BlueZero E-Cell Plus petrol-electric hybrid in September last year, it's hybrid powertrain producing 100kW and 320Nm of torque.

Based on the regular A-Class MPV and limited to just 500 units, the A-Class E-Cell is powered by a 50kW electric motor that delivers 290Nm of torque. For overtaking, the motor can also offer bursts of power up to 71kW.

Energy for that motor comes from a twin lithium-ion battery pack that, according to Mercedes-Benz, will offer a driving range of up to 200 kilometres.

The batteries can be recharged through a home power outlet over eight hours, or at public recharging stations over three hours - the standard of current technologies.

The 0-60km/h shuffle is covered in 5.5 seconds, with 100km/h achieved in a claimed 14 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 150km/h.

With a Europe-only launched planned for 2011, Mercedes-Benz has partnered with Germany energy company Energie Baden-Wurttemberg AG for the installation of 700 charging points around Germany.
