Legendary racing and sports car manufacturer Melkus is back and, by the looks of it, with a vengeance.
Opening shop in East Germany way back in 1959, the company focused mostly on race cars for Formula III, Formula Junior and Formula E, using engines and parts from Wartburgs and Trabants.
Of course, operating a successful automotive business in East Germany only ever got harder, and the company closed-up shop in 1986.
In 2006, Peter Melkus ? son of founder Heinz Melkus ? announced the brand?s return, along with a neat new sports car based on the company?s single road-going model, the RS1000.
The Melkus RS2000 is scheduled to go on sale in November, with only 25 units being produced each year.
Melkus is holding its cards close to its chest when it comes to technical details, but it?s clear that the RS2000 will feature aerodynamic styling inspired by the RS1000, right through to its gullwing doors.
Assisting its aerodynamics, it also features a completely closed underbody, along with a sizeable front spoiler and rear diffuser.
To keep weight to a minimum, the new Melkus is built on an aluminium chassis with body panels made entirely from carbon-fibre. With this construction, the car is expected to weigh ? get this ? less than 460kg.
No information is available yet regarding the engine and power figures ? the one thing we?d all love to know about ? but Peter Melkus himself said that more information will be released mid-year.
