Although Mazda is on the cusp of releasing the next generation of its evergreen Mazda3, sales figures for the current model show that the small hatchback and sedan is still as popular as ever.

Mazda has announced that it built its two millionth Mazda3 at the end of October, a fantastic achievement for a car that's been in production for only five years and four months. With the 3 currently on sale in over 101 countries, it's little wonder that production volumes of the car consistently rose for four years straight.

To put the Mazda3's achievement into perspective, it took Volkswagen nearly 10 years to produce just one million examples of the iconic Beetle.

Local sales of the Mazda3 passed the 150,000 mark this month, cementing the 3's position as one of Australia's most popular small cars.

With the second-generation model set to bring more refinement, more equipment and a more modern design to small car buyers, it'll be interesting to see how long the new 3 takes to surpass the records set by its predecessor. We're guessing it won't take long.
