MAZDA HAS TODAY revealed a pair of images of the Mazda MX-5 Superlight, a surprise concept the company plans to unveil at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The MX-5's folding roof stand, door handles and front windscreen have been replaced by a revised rear deck with streamlined rollbars, smooth door-skins and a dash-top that melds seamlessly with the bodywork.

Designed at Mazda's European studios in Oberusel, Germany, the MX-5 Superlight is understood to be a commemorative project to celebrate the MX-5's 20th anniversary this year.

Mazda has yet to offer any official details for the MX-5 Superlight, but according to British magazine car, it remains a concept for now.

Despite the lack of technical information, the Superlight name implies that the work on this special MX-5 reaches beneath the skin, including weight-reduction and handling modifications.
