Mazda has run the flag of its new Kodo styling language up the flagpole today, revealing its new Minagi crossover concept.

Tipped to enter Mazda's line-up as the CX-5, the production version of the Minagi will likely also hint at the future look of the larger CX-7 and CX-9 models when it debuts next year.

On the styling front, the compact crossover draws more than a few design cues from the ultra-sharp Shinari concept revealed last year, and both concepts offer an early look at what Mazda's new Kodo design language has in store for the company's passenger cars.

Mazda says that where the Shinari was "a pure design concept to express the Kodo potential," the Minagi offers the first true look at the next generation of Mazda vehicles.

"I wanted to convey something different from the Mazda Shinari. I felt a compact crossover SUV was the perfect vehicle to express agility and focused movement; the flexibility of four limbs moving in unison, and an upright posture," Minagi Concept Chief Design, Masashi Nakayama said.

While the Minagi has only been shown in the traditional five-door form at Geneva, the upcoming Range Rover Evoque - a favourite of motor show crowds in Europe - has apparently moved Mazda to consider a three-door variant in the 'CX-5' range.

The Minagi concept is powered by Mazda's new SkyActiv technologies, including a SkyActiv engine (Mazda has not specified SkyActiv-G petrol or SkyActiv-D diesel), along with the SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission.
